A Brief History

The Hardin County Independent in Elizabethtown, Illinois was established in 1871. Several other county publications were short-lived including The Hardin Mineral, The Gazette, The Hardin Democrat, The Hardin Republican, The Rosiclare Sentinel, and The Hardin Era.

Noel E. Hurford became publisher and editor in 1963, under the ownership of Harry L. Porter. After Porter's death, Hurford became owner in 1970. Julie Smith, Hurford's daughter, became editor in 1998 and owner/publisher in 2008 when Hurford died.

From the beginning, the Independent focused on local events -- town and county government, court, marriages, deaths, births, church news, family and friends' news, festivals, celebrations, etc. The archives contain a wealth of information about the families who settled here and established homes and businesses. The Independent truly is a historical document and will continue to be for generations to come.
