Mrs. Shirley Ann Patton Lewis was born in Cave In Rock on July 16, 1941 and left this world for God’s Kingdom on May 16, 2017. Shirley was an active member of Potters Church in Cave In Rock for nearly 50 years. As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the flowers she planted and loved each spring and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She quietly departed this life Monday, May 16, 2017 at Siteman Cancer Center Intensive Care, Saint Louis, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Lola Burklow Patton, and her three sisters, Esther Derringer, Agnes Patton and Inez Hensley.
Shirley graduated from Cave In Rock High School in 1958. She then married her high school sweetheart, Lonnie Ray Lewis, on April 30, 1960. They were the first couple to ever be wed in the newly constructed Mt. Zion church. They were so sure of their love for one another that even though there were no stairs into the church, they were willing to climb a ladder into the new sanctuary in order to say, “I Do”. Even after 57 years of marriage, Lonnie Ray still called Shirley his “Special Angel” and of course, she too loved him with all her heart.
Their union was blessed with one daughter, Judy Rae Lewis Kaegi, on October 30, 1960. They raised their daughter on the Lewis family farm, where they continued to grow their operation. Shirley worked hard to support her husband as they grew Circle L Farms to what it is today, a thriving farm operation. Shirley worked right beside Lonnie helping him run and round up cattle. She drove tractors in the fields, bottle fed calves and had an open door policy; Everyone was welcome at Shirley’s dinner table. Once again in 1994, Shirley was beside Lonnie Ray, and as a team they created a plan together that expanded their business with the purchase of the Cave In Rock Ferry. This was important to them both because it allowed the little own of Cave In Rock, which they both love so dearly, to once again have traffic flow through it. Shirley also continued to work at the Cave In Rock post office as the postal clerk, where she retired after 25 years of service to our community.
Shirley’s beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her husband, Lonnie Ray Lewis, daughter, Judy Lewis Kaegi and son-in-law, Douglas Kaegi, and her granddaughter, Loin Jo Kaegi Banks, along with grandson-in-law Bradley Banks and her great-grandchildren, Calen Bradley Banks and Raegan Kaegi Banks, special niece, Teresa Rohr and husband Dave, and many other nieces and nephews. She was blessed to marry into the large Doc and Cleta Lewis family and loved every one of them deeply.
Shirley and Lonnie were overcome with emotion by the outpouring of love, prayers and support that they received after her diagnosis and remission of Multiple Myeloma. Her strength and courage came from the word of God. Psalm 91 was her strength, hope, promise and encouragement from God. He truly was her refuge and fortress, in Him she did trust.
1 – He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 – I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust.
14 – Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:
I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.’
15 – He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 – With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
