Funeral services were held at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville Sunday, February 26, 2017, for Kay Bennett, 75, of the Cedar Grove community. Kay died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 22, 2107, at Baptist Health in Paducah, KY. Inturnment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Kay was born April 22, 1941, the daughter of James Marril and Pearl (Sutherland) Collier. She attended school in Hardin County, graduating from Rosiclare High School in 1959.
Following graduation, Kay went to Elgin to work at the State Hospital, it was there she met a handsome, black-haired young man, Carroll Bennett, also from Southern Illinois. Kay and Carroll married in December 1959. He preceded her in death in March 2015.
Kay had various jobs including working and in a factory, driving a school bus, and even cleaning at the funeral home for Ralph and Mary Catherine Aly. She worked in the Supervisor of Assessments office before taking a position in the General Assistance Office. It was from there that she retired, only to be asked to come back and work one day a week, and of course she did. There was a need and Kay filled it.
Kay had many hobbies, stitching, baking, crocheting, and making quilts. She also mended clothes for anyone who asked and could sew a button on in a “whip stitch.”
Kay had another hobby that gained her recognition, not only in Pope County, but in an ever-growing area and that would be her wine making. Kay shared her wine recipe with anyone who asked and would teach you the tricks of the trade if you just asked. And because someone asked, “Kay’s Way” wine is being sold today.
Kay leaves behind two daughters and sons-in-law, Tonya and Chuck Hughes of the Cedar Grove community, Sandra and Darrell Cowsert of Golconda; grandchildren Delaney, and husband Aaron Hall, of Golconda, Bennett, and wife Kaley Hughes, of the Cedar Grove community, Destaney Cowsert of Golconda, and Hilary Hughes, of the Cedar Grove community; and one very special, great-granddaughter, Raelynn Marie; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jay and Shirley Collier of Corryton, TN, Nelson and Anita Collier of Glendale, Elbert and Cathy Collier of Gilbert, AZ; a host of nieces and nephews, and lots and lots of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll; parents; an infant son, Carl Dewayne Bennett; brothers, Randall Vaughn, Cletus Vaughn, Don Collier; sisters, Doris Cowsert, Leta Mae Little, Cleta Cox, and an infant sister; and in-laws, George and Mary Bennett.
