Shirley Ann (Smock) Hall, age 72, passed away at her home in Harrisburg, Illinois, on June 8, 2016, at 3:15 a.m.
On December 12,1943, Shirley was born in Shetlerville, Illinois, to the late Richard and Bertha (Vanbaber) Smock. She was their eighth and last child. When only five months old, Shirley’s mother passed away. Her older sister, Lucille, and her husband, Clarence “Dock” Anderson, took Shirley into their home and raised her. Throughout the years, she always seemed more like their daughter rather than their sister/sister-in-law.
During the 16 years that Shirley lived with Lucille and Dock, she not only became an aunt but also a “big sister” to the Andersons’ three children — Bill, Betty, and Bob. She was so precious and special to them.
Shirley and Bill had the honor of attending Union School in Shetlerville, Illinois. They also attended the Grassity and Bay Valley Schools when the Anderson family lived in Pope County for a short time before returning to Shetlerville.
After leaving Shetlerville, Shirley moved to Harrisburg, Illinois, to live with her dad and stepmother. Soon after moving there, she met her future husband, Robert Hall. He had a young son, David, who also lost his mother at an early age.
Shirley and Robert were married several years and had three children together — Ronald, Patricia, and Tamara. Robert passed away in 1989. Their son/step-son, David, was killed at the age of 18 while serving our country during the Vet Nam War.
Shirley accepted Jesus as her Savior, and she enjoyed discussing Jesus and the Bible with others.
Her survivors include her children — Ronald (Victoria) Hall, Terri Haute, Indiana, Patricia (Roger) Paterson, Harrisburg, Illinois, Tamara (Glendal) Wiseman, Eldorado, Illinois, one brother, Lenard “Bud” (Tamora) Smock, Nilford Center, Ohio, 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a special friend, Nickey Fark.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Bertha Smock, stepmother, Maude Smock, husband, Robert, stepson David, sisters, Margaret (died in infancy), Lucille Anderson, Mary Shufflebarger Davidson, Wanda Gill, two brothers (died in infancy), several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and two great-grandsons, William and Carter Patterson.
Shirley was cremated. Many people will miss her.
