Hubert Eugene “Gene” Walker, age 67, of Metropolis, Illinois passed away December 17, 2015 at his residence with his loved ones by his side. He was born on March 19, 1948 to the late Galen and Louise (Fields) Walker in rural Cave In Rock, Illinois. He served in the United States ARMY and was a Korean War Veteran. He was Chief Deputy for Hardin County Sherriff’s Office for five years and was an over the road, owner operator of trucking for 35 years. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ in Metropolis, IL. Gene loved fishing, hunting and mostly aggravating and spending time with his family whom he loved so much, and Britches his dog. Gene is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jeanette Walker of Metropolis, IL; one son, Jeff Walker of Lincoln, IL; three daughters, Vanessa (Richard) Vaughn of Metropolis, IL, Serena Long of DuQuoin, IL, Evelyn (Calvin) Landis of DuQuoin, IL; one brother, David Earl (Nancy) Walker of Equality, IL; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a very special gal, Lisa Terry. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at the Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville, IL. Bro. Harold Miller conducted the service. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion Paul C Rowan Post 571 and interment followed the service at the Rose Cemetery in Elizabethtown, IL. Roger M. Brown, 72, of Cave-in-Rock, IL died Saturday, December 19, 2015 at his home in Cave-in-Rock, IL. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Survivors include his son, David Brown of Coal City, IL; brothers, Walter Brown, Jr. of Channahon, IL and Troy Brown of Smith Grove, KY; sisters, Mildred Littrell of Cave-In-Rock, IL, Thelma Theobald of Joliet, IL and Janice Foster of Cave-in-Rock, IL; and three grandchildren, Abbey, Jenna and Caleb Brown, all of Coal City, IL. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Saray Brown; parents, Walter Paris and Tommie Beatrice Brown, Sr.; one brother and one sister. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Potters Church in Cave-in-Rock, IL with interment in Cave Hill Cemetery. Military Rites were given at the cemetery on Tuesday.
Steve Douglas II, 58, of Paducah, died Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at his home. Steve formerly worked for the Job Corps. in Golconda, IL. Steve is survived by two sisters, Sharon Davis of Calvert City, KY and Karen Hubbs of Cave In Rock, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve Andrew Douglas and Elda Loretta Briggs Graham. Private family services will be held at a later date. Lindsey Funeral Home of Paducah is in charge of arrangements.
Nelda Frances Phelps, 91, of Marion, KY died Monday, December 14, 2015 at Crittenden County Health and Rehab. She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Marion, KY, long time employee of The Peoples Bank and various other community organizations. Surviving are her brother, Earl Phelps of Tennessee; 13 nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Francis and Daisy Phelps. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday December 16, 2015 at Gilbert Funeral Home in Marion, KY with interment in Mapleview Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday. Donnie Ray Patton, age 72, of Brighton, Michigan died suddenly from a fall while working at his farm home North of Cave-in-Rock by Suits Hill. Donnie was born and raised around the Sparks Hill area near Cave-in-Rock on March 29, 1943, to the late Lawrence Thurston and Ula (Reed) Patton. On June 25, 1966 he married the former Alaunda (Austin) who survives. Donnie owned and operated a construction firm for many years in Michigan. Donnie loved being outside, riding 4 wheelers, building things, and studying Genealogy, but he especially loved playing guitar and singing. He had a passion for bringing together his family and friends. Whether it was hosting 50 plus family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner, or putting up a new door for a niece, he was never happier than when he was serving others. Donnie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will leave a great absence in the lives of all that had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his wife of 49 plus years, Alaunda; a son, Greg (Brenda) Patton, of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Angela (Danny) Fitchett of Brighton, MI; five grandchildren, Austin and Joelle Patton, Addison, Payton and Nash Fitchett; three brothers, Garcia (Thelma) Patton of Xenia, Ohio, Cecil (Van) Patton of Cave-in-Rock, and Billy (Sandy) Patton of Benton, KY; two sisters, Ethna (Bill) Joyce of Alton, IL and Margaret (Ross) Barber of San Jose, CA; and a sister in law, Donna Sue Austin of Prattville, AL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett (Mildred) Patton; and three sisters, Monav (Tommy) Donithan, Corena (Bud) Schutt and Shelba (Jim) Franklin; and a brother-in-law, Jim Austin. Visitation for Donnie will be on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Leamington Community Church and his funeral will immediately follow starting at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Arthur Austin, Jr. and Rev. Lee Fricker will officiate. Entombment will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery north of Cave-in-Rock.
