Gordon Ray McDowell, 87, of Mt. Vernon, IL, formerly of Cave-in-Rock, IL died Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Lone Oak Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Joyce McDowell of Mt. Vernon, IL; sons, Mitch (Shelley) McDowell of Mt. Vernon, IL and Mike (Ronda) McDowell of Phoenix, AZ; daughters, Phyllis (Max) Frailey of San Antonio, TX and Cindy (Kerry) Maxam of Benton, KY; brother, Gathel McDowell of Marion, IL; sister, Veldine Riggs of Marion, IL; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Williams of San Antonio, TX, Hannah, Elisha and Grace McDowell – all of Mt. Vernon, IL, Emily Marek and Brandon McDowell of Phoenix, AZ, Alex Maxam of Nashville, TN and Andrew Maxam of San Antonio, TX; and two great-grandchildren, Max and Elizabeth Williams of San Antonio, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manford and Mildred McDowell, and sister, Frances Warren. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23 at Rose-Gilbert Funeral Home in Cave-in-Rock with interment in Cave Hill Cemetery. The family received visitors from 11:00 a.m until the time of service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Alzheimers Association.
