Ruby L. Humm, twin daughter of W.C. (Will) Lawrence and Della Grace (Aly) Lawrence was born November 4, 1920, at the family farm near Robbs, Illinois. She grew up on that farm with her twin sister Ruth, brother Ewing, twin sisters Irene and Alene and sister Velma. At the age of 15, Ruby gave her heart to Jesus and was baptized near the Glendale Methodist Church, where she remained a member her entire life. After graduating from Pope County High School, Ruby attended the Teachers’ College in Carbondale for two years, receiving a teacher’s certificate. Through a mutual friend at the CCC at Camp Eddyville, she met the love of her life, Cyril Humm, of Eichorn. Cyril and Ruby were united in marriage on May 14, 1941, and enjoyed 61 years together. Miss Humm, as she will be fondly remembered by hundreds of former students, began her teaching career in the one-room schools of rural Pope County – first between Glendale and Robbs, and next at Waltersburg. In 1943, Cyril and Ruby moved to the Humm Wye, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Miss Humm taught at Union School near Shetlerville. She was then offered a teaching position at Rosiclare Grade School, where she finished her teaching career, retiring in 1976. Ruby had many cherished memories of her years as a teacher in Southern Illinois. She loved to share those memories of “her kids”, as she called former students. Three children were born to Ruby and Cyril: Victoria Lynn and Roger Hobbs of Norris City, Mary Elaine Vaughn of Rosiclare, and Jeffrey Leon and Sharon Humm of the Wye. Precious grandchildren were born to light up Ruby and Cyril’s life: Heather (Hobbs) and Eric Vandiver of Shreveport, Louisiana; Lincoln and Whitney Hobbs of Norris City; Ryan and Natalie Vaughn of Elizabethtown; Brandon and Aleshia Vaughn of the Wye; Holly (Hobbs) and DeWayne McKoy of Benton, Louisiana; Krystal Humm of Harrisburg; and Miranda Hutchison of Carbondale. In later years, Ruby was blessed with numerous great-grandchildren: Dawson Hubbs; Jaxon, Skyler, and Blaze Lawrence Vandiver; Mallory and Mason Hobbs; Raegan Vaughn; Kingston Vaughn; Savannah and Trevor McKoy; and Cody Hutchison. She went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2015, at Hardin County General Hospital at the age of 94 years, 5 months, and 28 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, 4 sisters, and great-grandson Cameron McKoy. Called by many names such as Mom, Grandma, Nannie, Great Grandma, Aunt, Teacher, and Friend, Ruby was so loved and will be greatly missed by so many. Hardin County Funeral Services, Cox Funeral Home, was in charge of arrangements. Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Cox Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 also at Cox Funeral Home. Rev. Roger Hobbs officiated the services. Burial followed at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
